King Ferry Winery to celebrate Grape Harvest
King Ferry Winery, maker of Treleaven wines, is celebrating the Grape Harvest from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 11 and 12. Live music, a radio remote from Lite 97.3, food vendors, and free wine tasting are featured. The celebration is being held in conjunction with Bakers Acres Apple Festival Saturday, Oct. 11, at their business on Auburn Road, Lansing.

Americana Jubilee to be held Oct. 11 at Castaways
The fourth annual Americana Jubilee will be held from 3 p.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11 at Castaways, 413 Taughannock Blvd.
This one-day mini-festival is a celebration of the Americana music of the Finger Lakes. The Americana Jubilee IV will feature numerous local musicians on two stages, rotating between the main stage and the deck at Castaways, providing 10 hours of continuous music. Festival performers this year will include The MacGuillicuddies, Who You Are, Urban Horse Thieves, Uniit Carruyo, The Chicken Tractor, Mortal Combine, Michael Hansen, Regina O'Brien, Grain Elevator and The Small Kings.
The Americana Jubilee is sponsored by Ithaca Beer, who will be providing Ithaca Beer specials. Entrance to the event will be $8. Proceeds from the Jubileee will be donated to the Healthy Food For All program of the Full Plate Collective.
Healthy Food For All provides WIC and Food Stamp eligible community members with access to a variety of fresh, locally grown produce at a price they can afford through subsidized Community Supported Agriculture shares. Full Plate Farms is a local collective of Community Supported Agriculture farms.
Food Safety Training to be held Oct. 22
Cornell Cooperative Extension will be offering a Food Safety Training for employees and volunteers in food service from 1-5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, at the CCE Education Center, 615 Willow Ave. This four-hour class will cover the basics of foodborne illness; purchasing, receiving, and storing food; preparing, cooking, and serving; cleaning, and sanitizing.

White Springs Winery wins medal for 2005 Riesling
White Springs Winery's 2005 Riesling won a Gold Medal and three other White Springs wines also received prizes at this summer's New York Wine & Food Classic.
The winery, located in Geneva at the gateway to the Seneca Lake Wine Trail, won Bronze Medals for its 2006 Sauvignon Blanc, 2006 Rose and 2006 Chardonnay-Pinot Grigio blend at the 2008 Classic. This year's competition was held Aug. 19 and 20 at the Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz.
White Springs winemaker Derek Wilber noted that it's the 2005 Riesling's second gold medal this summer. The wine also captured Gold at the 17th annual Indy International Wine Competition in Indianapolis in late June.
Now in its 23rd year, the Classic is organized by Teresa Knapp of the New York Wine & Grape Foundation, and is open to all 242 New York wineries from all regions of the state. This year's competition included 775 New York wines from the Finger Lakes, Long Island, Hudson Valley and other regions.
The awards were based on blind tastings by 25 expert judges seven from California, 11 from New York and seven from other states. Judges included prominent wine writers, restaurateurs, retailers and wine educators.

The Danby Federated Church looking for recipes for community cookbook
Danby embraces a diverse population rich in cultural and historic backgrounds. Tabasco sauce competition announced
McIlhenny Company, maker of Tabasco brand products, has announced the fifth national Cook & Ladder Competition — the search for America's “hottest” firehouse cook.
Firefighters nationwide are invited to turn up the heat for a chance to cook their way to the $10,000 grand prize, to be split evenly between the winning firefighter an his or her firehouse.
Original recipe submissions for appetizers, soups, salads, entrees, side dishes or dessert must include at least one of the six pepper sauces in the Tabasco family of flavors: original pepper sauce, green jalapeno pepper sauce, garlic pepper sauce, chipotle pepper sauce, habañero sauce or sweet & spicy pepper sauce.
Entries will be judges on the following criteria: originality and creativity, taste, use of Tabasco sauce, recipe clarity and presentation. All entries must be postmarked by Friday, Oct. 31, 2008. Firefighters with professional culinary training are not eligible.
Ten finalists will be selected and flown to a cook-off in New York City in early 2009. A panel of judges will determine America's “hottest” firehouse cook and name two runners-up.
Grand prize is $10,000; second prize is $5,000; and third prize is $2,000.

Seneca Lake Wine Trail 2009 event schedule
The Seneca Lake Wine Trail announces its 2009 event schedule:
* Polar Passport, valid from Monday, Dec. 8 to Monday, April 13, enables visitors and residents to affordably visit participating wineries without a tasting fee. The passport costs $10.
* Bargain Bash, from Saturday, Jan. 10 to Monday, Jan. 19, is a non-ticketed event and year-end clearance sale with many wineries providing discounts on a variety of retail items, including wine.
* Pasta and Wine weekend will be held from 1-5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 1, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 10 and 19. Wineries will serve pasta-themed dishes paired with wine.
* Chocolate and wine weekend will be held from 1-5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 7 and 8. The event combines wine and chocolate-themed dishes.
* Cruisin' The Topics Weekend will be held from 1-5 p.m. Friday, March 27, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, March 28 and 29. “Cruise” the virtual tropics of the Seneca Lake Wine Trail and enjoy tropically themed foods and fine wine.
* Spring Wine & Cheese Weekend will be held from 1-5 p.m. Friday, April 24, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, April 25 and 26. Co-sponsored by McCadam Cheese, the event combines wine and cheese.
* Riesling to Visit Passport, from Friday, May 1 to Saturday, Aug. 31, is functionally identical to the Polar Passport. Bearers receive a complimentary flight of wine samples at participating wineries.
* The Golden Nose Award: A Finer Lakes Wine Experience will be held from 6-8 p.m. Friday, May 29, and from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, May 30. The wine competition is comprised exclusively of Finger Lakes wines, judged by ticket holders.
* November Deck the Halls Weekend will be held from 1-5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20 and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday Nov. 21 and 22. December Deck the Halls Weekend will be held from 1 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4 and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday Dec. 5 and 6. Attendees receive complimentary food and wine pairing, as well as a custom ornament to decorate their handmade grapevine wreath.
