Pair of CU field hockey players named all-region

Cornell field hockey players Catie DeStio and Belen Martinez were each named to the 2008 Longstreth/NFHCA Division I Mideast Region All-American teams on Wednesday.

De Stio, who was named to the first team, became just the third sophomore in program history to earn a first-team selection. An All-Ivy pick, De Stio posted the ninth-highest single-season total in Big Red history with 10 goals and six assists. Four of her scored were game winners.

Martinez, a senior, picked up her third Mideast Region All-American honor as a member of the second team. Martinez was at the core of a defense that allowed 5.4 penalty corners per game, the lowest total for the team since the stat began to be recorded in 1998. She is the only Big Red player to be named All-Ivy four times.
