Ithaca Shooting Stars hockey results

The 19-and-under and 12U Ithaca Shooting Stars girls hockey team each had several games the last two weekends.

Last weekend, the 19U competed in the Kingston Ice Wolves Tournament in Ontario, Canada, and finished 1-2-1. Ithaca tied its first game with Brockville Angels, 2-2. Katie Long and Emily Eisenhut each registered a goal and an assist. Long scored the game's only goal in a 1-0 victory over the Napanee Crunch with an assist from Eisenhut. Goalie Sarah Eisenhut was strong in net the final two games, but the Shooting Stars lost 1-0 to both the Castor River Coyotes and Cold Creek Comets.

The 12U team went 1-1 in two games at home. Caitlyn Whittaker made 28 saves in a 7-0 loss to the Camillus Cougars and another 26 in the 2-1 win against the Binghamton Blizzard. Anna Kirkwood and Paige Johnson scored the goals.

Both the 12U and 19U teams stayed local the weekend of Nov. 15-16. The 19U squad defeated the Skaneateles 16U team, 5-0, and tied the Rome 16U team, 2-2. Lauren Cole totaled two goals and an assist over the two games. Katie Long and Ali Pace had a goal and an assist in the win over Skaneateles.

Whittaker stopped a combined 57 shots in the 12U's 2-1 loss to Binghamton and 5-3 defeat to the IYHA Squirt Snowbelt team. Anastasia Lyon tallied a goal in both games. Kirkwood and Johnson notched the other scores.

Stoneybrook Equestrian Team results

Both Stoneybrook Equestrian teams earned enough points at the Grier School competition over the weekend to qualify for their zone finals. The team, comprised of riders across Tompkins County, competed in Tyrone, Pa.

The Upper School team has 21 points and the Middle School team has 13, with 12 needed to compete in the zone finals. At Tyrone, Elizabeth Frieden (7), McKinley Baldwin (6), Amari Suskin-Sperry (4) and Chesna Mandl (1) each earned points for the Upper School. Erin Bell (6) and Stephanie Roe (3) scored for Middle School.

Dentes wrestling program opens Monday

The George Dentes Youth Wrestling Program will have its registration and first practice at 6 p.m. Monday in the Ithaca High School Wrestling Room. The program is for kids ages 6-14 who are interested in learning how to wrestle. Beginners and experienced wrestlers are welcome.

Practices will be from 6-7:30 p.m. on Monday and Thursday. For more information, call Mike Shippos at 592-2375 or Rich Burke at 273-7595.

Lansing Rec accepting wrestling registrations

The Town of Lansing Recreation Department is currently accepting registration for youth wrestling program that is set to start on Dec. 1. The program is for students in grades K-6 and will take place in the Lansing High School wrestling room from 6-7:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Also in the works is a basketball program for students in grades 2-3 that will begin at the end of February. Registration will begin soon. Ski program participants should make sure they have registered for transportation. New members are still welcome.

IHS grad McCabe golfing in Argentina

Andy McCabe, a 1998 Ithaca High graduate, is competing in two international events in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He will be representing the U.S. in the International Team two-man best-ball competition Nov. 27-30 and will play as an individual in the Juan Carlos Tailhade Cup, which is a joint event with the International Team.

McCabe finished ninth in Texas among mid-amateurs this year.

Wrestling show benefits McDonald Complex

A pro wrestling event put on by East Coast Pro Wrestling Dec. 5 will be a partial benefit for the Jim McDonald Sports Complex.

Gates open at 7 p.m. and bell time for the first match is 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $10 for students with identification.

The JM McDonald Sports Complex houses indoor athletic fields, an ice rink, and trade show and meeting spaces. It's at 4292 Fairgrounds Road in Cortland.

CU basketball teams to hold youth clinic

The Cornell men's basketball team will be running a free clinic for elementary-aged children from 10-11 a.m. on Dec. 13 at Newman Arena. Members of the team will work with the children on several different fundamentals.

Following the clinic, members of both the men's and women's teams will have a free throw shooting competition for charity. Each participant will shot 100 free throws and whoever makes the most wins. People can sponsor any of the players and all money raised goes to the United Way.

T-burg teams named to state scholar athlete list

The Trumansburg Central School District announced recently that five of its fall varsity athletic teams — volleyball, boys cross country, girls cross country, boys soccer and girls soccer — are on the NYSPHSAA Scholar Athlete list.

To be named to the list, a team must have a specific number of athletes with an academic average of 90 percent or greater.

Youth bureau setting up winter programs

The Ithaca Youth Bureau is now accepting registrations for its upcoming winter basketball, indoor soccer and cheerleading programs.

* For youths in grades 1-2, the IYB is offering “small ball” on Sundays from Jan. 4 to Feb. 8. Fee is $30.

* A 6th grade basketball league for girls and boys begins Dec. 1. There are weekly practices with games beginning in mid-January. Fee is $55.

* An indoor soccer league for kids in grades 1-9 will start practices in mid-December and games on Jan. 11. Fee is $50. There will also be a skill development program for ages 4-5 that will meet on Saturdays. The fee is $35.

* Cheerleading for youth in grades 1-6 begins Dec. 4 with a fee of $40.

Sport Management Auction upcoming

An online auction of autographed sports memorabilia, donated by the SUNY Cortland Sports Management Department alumni and friends, will take place between Friday, Dec. 5 and Monday, Dec. 15.

The auction offers a wide array of autographed items, including photos, uniforms, helmets, framed letters, basketballs, baseballs, NASCAR license plates, hockey sticks, trading cards and more.

Fly fishing program set for early January

The Leon Chandler Chapter of Trout Unlimited and Tompkins County Cooperative Extension 4-H Program will be offering an extensive fly fishing education program beginning Jan. 10.

The program will consist of eight two-hour classes that run every Saturday from 6-8 p.m. All classes will be held at the Tompkins County Cooperative Extension Education Center at 615 Willow Avenue, Ithaca.

There is limited enrollment and a 50 percent tuition deposit must be given with the application to hold a place. Fees are $135 and $110 for children. Tuition covers instruction and all tools, hooks and tying materials.

New women's football team in Binghamton seeks players

The Binghamton Tiger Cats, a football team that will compete in the Northeast Division of the Women's Football Alliance, is looking for new players. To register, contact coach John Evans at (315) 664-6644 or jevans2@rochester.rr.com.

The team will play its home games at the Greater Binghamton Sports Complex after recently relocating from Rochester due to a lack of players.

College football league forming

George and Peter St. Lawrence, second and third generation football coaches, have created the Collegiate Development Football League, a program designed to give 18- to 24-year-old players the college football experience that they may not have received for various reasons.

The CDFL will be based in Hillburn, a suburb of New York City, and is a 6-7 week package that includes a tryout/mini-camp, a draft for team placement, actual game play, an academic placement plan and a complete evaluation and assessment program. The league is scheduled to begin July 6.
