Binghamton repeats a trouncing of Horseheads

By Mike Manganmmangan@gannett.com • October 31, 2009, 12:05 am

BINGHAMTON -- It wasn't quite as smooth a start Friday for Binghamton against Horseheads as it had enjoyed a week earlier against the Blue Raiders.

The outcome, however, was a similar one.

Dorian Feggins rushed for 216 yards and two touchdowns, and quarterback Wayne Bonsell passed for two touchdowns and ran for one as well as the Patriots rolled to a 55-3 victory over Horseheads in a Section 4 Class AA football semifinal game at Binghamton Alumni Stadium.

Binghamton (7-2), which had beaten Horseheads, 51-6, in the two teams' regular-season finale last Saturday, will have the chance to defend its Section 4 Class AA title when it meets either Union-Endicott or Ithaca at 7 Friday night at a site to be determined.

"You take all of this for granted, when you come into high school you're waiting for it to get over with, but I wish I could start back over," said Binghamton senior linebacker Chris Williams, who played his final home game with the Patriots and has clearly cherished his team's resurgence in recent years. "No matter who we play it will be a good game. I'm looking forward to playing good football."

Binghamton earned the opportunity for a second straight Section 4 title with another dominating performance, albeit a little sluggish in the early going.

After scoring 21 first-quarter points last Saturday en route to that 45-point win over Horseheads (1-8), Binghamton led just 7-0 -- courtesy of a 19-yard touchdown pass from Bonsell to Alex Newman -- with a little more than two minutes remaining in the first quarter.

The Patriots failed to score on two of their opening three drives and had four plays go for losses, including a pair of sacks by Horseheads linebacker Zach Stone.

But on third-and-19 from the Binghamton 45-yard line, Bonsell connected on a 39-yard pass play to Tino Yevchinecz to the Horseheads' 16, and three plays later Bonsell scored on an 8-yard run to give Binghamton a 14-0 lead with 1 minute, 1 second left in the first quarter.

Binghamton effectively ended Horseheads' upset hopes late in the second quarter when Feggins scored on a 27-yard run on fourth-and-5 to make it 21-0 with 2:01 left.

The Patriots poured it on in the third quarter, scoring three touchdowns.

Bonsell opened the scoring in the quarter with a 21-yard touchdown pass to Yevchinecz, Williams followed with a blocked punt that was recovered in the end zone by Kareem Leaver for a touchdown, and Feggins closed the third-quarter scoring with an 89-yard touchdown run with 4:42 remaining that put Binghamton up, 41-0.

Binghamton coach Mike Ramel seemed generally pleased with the performance, considering the potential for a lack of focus following last week's easy victory.

"The thing is, these are teen-agers and anything can happen," Ramil said. "You can assume you're going to win but that doesn't mean you're going to win. We knew we had to prepare for these guys. There were years we thought we were going to beat them handily and they gave us good games."
