CORNING -- For the Corning East football team to earn a rematch against its rival, the Trojans needed a return to form Saturday night.

They got it, running wild in a 55-34 victory over Elmira Free Academy in a Section 4 Class A semifinal game at Corning Memorial Stadium.

The victory ended a two-game losing streak and sent East into the championship game against defending champion Corning West, which handed the Trojans a 30-20 loss last week in the Crystal City Classic.

Despite battling a cold, Jordan Frysinger ran for 221 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries for East, including a spectacular 63-yard touchdown run in the second quarter that saw him make a stop-and-start cutback move at midfield to get into the clear, then punctuate the play with a dive into the end zone for the final four yards.

Tanner Morse added 121 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries, and quarterback Brandon Griffin had a big second half and finished with 102 yards and a touchdown on 16 rushes.

Jason Smith also ran for a touchdown in his return from a broken collarbone, but Trojans head coach Tim Hughes said it appeared Smith broke the collarbone again later in the game.

East had 474 yards, all on the ground.

"The offensive line worked extremely hard all week. They knew they were going to have to step up today if we were going to have success," Frysinger said. "We could have put a guard at running back and he would have probably had 100 yards today. They just did an amazing job."

East (7-2) and West (7-2) will meet for the championship at Corning Memorial Stadium, with the game tentatively scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday.

Corning West beat Southside on Friday in the other semifinal, 31-7.

"It's what we wanted," Hughes said. "We wanted to play for the sectional gold and here it is. I'm proud of our kids to achieve that, but we know we're going to need a tremendous effort (against West). I think how we played defense tonight, if we give up that effort next week, then I think everyone knows what the outcome is going to be."

Junior quarterback Terrell Brown ran for 228 yards and touchdown runs of 2 and 45 yards for Academy, which finished 2-7 after opening the season with six losses. Felix White had touchdown runs of 16 and 11 yards for the Blue Devils.

For the Corning East offense, it was a love it or lose it first quarter. The Trojans ran only three plays, with a 34-yard touchdown run by Morse sandwiched around a pair of fumbles that were recovered by Academy.

But the Trojans were sharper in the second quarter, reeling off big run after big run en route to 253 rushing yards in the half. Smith scored on a 19-yard run and Morse followed Frysinger's long scoring run with a 3-yard touchdown that helped East go ahead 32-8.

The Trojans added 12 points by going 6-for-6 on two-point tries.

"I'm real proud of our guys on offense," Hughes said. "We had a rhythm going pretty much the entire game."

Elmira Free Academy cut East's lead to 32-16 when Erik Simmons recovered the ball in the end zone for a touchdown after teammate Tyler Maycumber fumbled at the 1.

The Blue Devils cut further into East's lead in the third quarter with a 12-play, 80-yard drive that concluded with a 16-yard touchdown run up the middle by White. The two-point try failed, leaving the score 32-22 with 3:22 remaining in the quarter.

However, East responded with a 14-play, 73-yard drive that Frysinger topped with a 10-yard touchdown run after taking the pitch from Griffin on an option play.

Each team scored twice more in the final quarter, but the Devils were never able to get within eight points of the lead.
