With just 13 players in uniform on Wednesday and playing against a school without a football program, third-seeded Candor played an even first half before running out of gas during a 5-0 loss to second-seeded Margaretville in the Section 4 Class D boys soccer semifinals in Oneonta.
"They had so many players we couldn't even write them all in," Candor coach Bob Thompson said.
Margaretville's Marcus Moore scored the only first-half goal just one minute, 20 seconds into the game.
"It wasn't totally lopsided," said Candor coach Bob Thompson, his team finishing 9-8. "After the first goal, the lights came on and we started attacking. We could play with them. We had the ball down there many times. In the second half we just got behind the eight-ball a little bit."
Moore's goal came when he took a pass from Tyler Smith at the top of the penalty box and blasted it into the upper right-hand corner.
"It was a nice goal," Thomson said. "We weren't marking the guy in the middle and he took and 'bang' it went in."
Of Margaretville's four second-half goals, one hit a post and another hit a crossbar before going in.
Indians goalkeeper Randy Nedrow made eight saves.
"I didn't think we would go this far," Thompson said. "With their hard work and good practices and playing as a team, they were able to go further than I expected."
Margaretville plays No. 1 seed and fellow unbeaten Cherry Valley-Springfield at 11 Saturday morning at the Hall of Fame fields in Oneonta.
Class C
* Marathon 4, S-VE 1: The Olympians reached their fifth straight sectional championship game behind a three-goal first half to beat visiting Spencer-Van Etten.
Tyler Marsh scored in the fourth minute to get top-seeded Marathon on the board, and Doug Whitney made it 2-0 a few minutes later when he converted a Mike Bellefleuer pass.
Josh Lincoln headed in a Ted Morrison corner kick in the final minute for a three-goal cushion.
"I thought we played very well," Marathon coach Chip Stewart said. "We just didn't finish off some things. A lot of that was due to Spencer. They did some good things."
Christian Pasto scored the Panthers' goal in the second half, banging home a service from Eddie Butler. Keith Nelson made 11 saves in goal for S-VE, which finished its season with an 11-4-3 record.
Marathon (14-2) will play Greene at 11:15 a.m. Saturday at the National Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta.
