Boys
Section 4 Class AA Championship
Matchup: 1-Vestal (16-1-0) vs. 2-Ithaca (13-2) at National Soccer Hall of Fame, Oneonta, 2:15 p.m.
Recent history: Last year, these two teams tied for the Section 4 title, and the Little Red earned a berth in the state tournament by virtue of a penalty-kick victory. Two years ago, the Golden Bears shut out Ithaca for the sectional title, en route to the state championship. This year, Vestal swept the regular season series by scores of 4-1 and 2-1.
Outlook: Ithaca is coming off an impressive 4-1 semifinal victory over Corning last Saturday, a performance that prompted coach Jeff DuMont to call it maybe the team's best showing this season. Casey Williamson scored two goals in the win, and Andrew Troisi added a goal and an assist. Vestal, ranked No. 4 in Class AA, advanced with a 2-1 victory over Union-Endicott.
Vestal has had Ithaca's number in recent years, but the two teams are about equal from a talent standpoint this season. Translation: in the postseason, anything can happen. Ithaca proved that in 2008.
"You can expect a well-played match between two good ballclubs when we meet Vestal," DuMont said. "We look forward to playing them every time; it's always tooth-and-nail matches."
Girls
Section 4 Class B Championship
Matchup: 1-Chenango Forks (16-1-1) vs. 3-Lansing (16-0) at Ty Cobb Stadium, Union-Endicott, 2 p.m.
Recent history: Lansing topped Forks in each of the last two Class B championship games, by 1-0 scores. Last year, it was junior Ellyn Grant Keane scoring the only goal in the 12th minute, off a pass from Megan Palladino.
Outlook: Forks returns two potent scorers in seniors Taylor Mazursky (37 goals) and Mallory Illsley (29 goals), and a cast of players intent on redemption. Forks advanced with a 5-1 win Tuesday over Seton Catholic.
Several members of Lansing's current roster contributed significantly over the past two Forks victories, the least of which was not Brown-bound goaltender M.C. Barrett, who made 10 big saves in the 2007 game. Grant Keane has two goals and an assist in two sectional games, and Kathryn Hornibrook found the net twice Tuesday in a one-goal win over Owego. Cassie Palladino has been a physical, steady presence in the defensive end, along with Lydia Warkentin.
Of all the sectional championship games scheduled for Saturday, this one may be the best. Lansing is ranked No. 1 in the state by the New York State Sportswriters Association. Forks is No. 2. The winner plays in a state semifinal on Nov. 14 at a Section 4 site to be determined.
Section 4 Class C Championship
Matchup: 4-Newark Valley (14-2-1) vs. 2-Notre Dame (16-1) at Ty Cobb Stadium, 11 a.m.
Recent history: Notre Dame defeated Newark Valley twice during the regular season, by scores of 3-2 and 1-0.
Outlook: The Crusaders will be going for their first sectional championship since 2004. They advanced Tuesday with a 1-0 semifinal win over Unatego, with Rachael Lamoreaux scoring a second-half goal.
Newark Valley upset defending champion Marathon, 3-2, storming back from a 2-0 deficit. Angela Halliday scored twice, with Lindsay Bakal adding one goal and one assists.
The winner will play the Section 3 champion on Nov. 14 at a Section 4 site to be determined.
