Buddhism intertwines with Tibet's long historyThe history of Tibet can be traced back more than 2,000 years through a long line of imperial rulers. The first Buddhist monastery was established in Tibet during the late 8th century. In the late 1300s, the first Buddhist monk received the title Dalai Lama after impressing a Mongolian visitor with his vast knowledge of Buddhism. The title, loosely translated, means “Ocean of Wisdom.” More
Themes for the Dalai Lama's visitPerhaps the most important aspect of the visit of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to highlight is the incredible amount of cooperation it already has fostered. When, in March 2006, Namgyal Monastery learned that our request for His Holiness to visit had been accepted, we immediately embraced the theme of “Bridging Worlds” with the realization that often Cornell University, Ithaca College and the local communities do seem like separate worlds. So we hope that the enormous effort that hundreds from these worlds have made toward a successful visit will have produced also a keener awareness of the benefits of working together toward a common goal. This is easily said, but the real difficulty in doing it, and in doing anything else in which compromise and cooperation are needed, is in overcoming one's own self-interest. It almost sounds banal, but it is startling how frequently we all cling to our own concerns, which seem so desperately important to us. This is the simple message that applies to every relationship, from one's own family to international political situations; and it is only one's stubborn protection of a perceived self-interest that defeats progress and growth. When His Holiness says that real self-interest is always other-interest, it is the simple fact that none of us is truly independent of each other that is the basis. This is often clear on the level of international politics, but it is so at any level of interaction. This has been a recurring theme in the public talks His Holiness has given and is likely to be so in his Cornell address. So to the extent that those involved in the coordination of this visit have succeeded in setting aside mere self-interest, it has already been a success. It is our sincere hope that this attitude will continue and grow. More Programs by the Dalai LamaThe Dalai Lama will appear in three events in Ithaca on Oct. 9 and 10.
