    Saulnier: 'Dark Shadows' not a total horror, but toothless

    Like a vampire on his way to a predawn staking, "Dark Shadows" got trounced at the weekend box office — coming in a distant second to the behemoth that is "The Avengers," as the latest pairing of director Tim Burton and muse Johnny Depp pulled in some $29 million to the superheroes' $103 million. It was a toothless (fangless?) showing for Burton's comic-adventure take on the 1960s cult soap opera, about a vampire named Barnabas Collins who lives and loves in a gothic Maine village.
