 Letters to the Editor

  1. Letter: Mayor doing her best with deer-cull issue

I was elected mayor of Cayuga Heights in 2008 with a mandate to resolve the deer overpopulation safety problem. Once elected, we were close to culling the herd due to deer-tick emergence, growing incidence of Lyme disease, outgrowth of deer-car accidents, vast deforestation of our community and the more uncommon human/deer or pet/deer conflict. The trustees' and my last majority vote in 2008 was for affirmatively acting on a cull-and-sterilize plan.

  2. Letter: GM crops aren't 'feeding the world'

Peter Davies (Ithaca Journal, Jan. 19) is entitled to his opinion regarding genetically modified crops. But feeding the world?

  3. Letter: Go ahead and let GOP spend, spend, spend

The Punch and Judy show that is the current Republican presidential contest has caused me to rethink my position on Citizens United. It's the perfect platform for profligate spending on the two men who best represent their party's social and financial mores. We get a ringside seat to watch fiscal conservatives pour millions of dollars into the campaign coffers of Mitt Romney, a man who made his living shipping your job and his untaxed profits overseas.

  4. Letter: Fracking is all about mitigating risks

Fortunately, this unique and beautiful Earth of ours does provide, for us all, the necessities for life.

  5. Laurel: GIAC appreciated Christmas trees

From Zach Nelson, GIAC Senior Program Coordinator: Thanks to Hunt's Christmas Trees for donating a tree to the GIAC Senior Program. It helped brighten our holiday celebration and the GIAC building for the season.

  6. Laurel: Eatery aids fundraiser for Ithaca girls' team

From Mary and Bernie DePalma: Many thanks to Applebee's at 2300 N. Triphammer Road for recently hosting a Flapjack Fundraiser in conjunction with the Ithaca High School girls' basketball team. Applebee's commitment to our local schools and community is both commendable and much appreciated.

  7. Laurel: Donations brightened local holiday season

From the American Red Cross of Tompkins County: Thanks to all the people and organizations that stepped forward this holiday season and donated food, clothing, toys and gifts to make life brighter for those in need.

  8. Letter: Stick to writing about the outdoors

What does Dave Henderson's column about the protest of Starbucks' gun policy have to do with "Outdoors," which is the name of his column? How exactly does bringing handguns into a coffee shop relate to what his column is supposed to be about?

  9. Letter: Face reality: Deer herds out of control

As a member of reality, a fee-paying sportsman and an overburdened taxpayer, I feel the need to pass on a few thoughts from the sick-of- being-silent majority.

  10. Letter: Corporations aren't only ones benefiting

Will Fudeman's Jan. 26 Guest Viewpoint in the Ithaca Journal ("Amendment would halt 'personhood' of corporations") may have a good goal, but his history is flawed and his villain selectively picked (thereby ignoring the rest of the set of beneficiaries).

  11. Letter: Story failed to note vaccine for distemper

I was shocked by a glaring omission in the article about the dog supposedly "cured" of canine distemper.

  12. Letter: Parents have role in kids' education, too

There has been much discussion of teacher evaluation. Having been a successful teacher for more than 30 years, I feel as though my opinion might count for something. It's true that some teachers need careful evaluation. At my school, we had incompetent teachers that still got tenure, much to the amazement of the other faculty.
