The Feb. 7 letter to the editor by Robert H. Gessner ("Fracking is all about mitigating risks") was outstanding, and I, for one, want to commend him.
I know we feel helpless about how to help the family of Chris Bordoni.
Speaking to fellow socialists on Sept. 11, 1908, at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, Eugene Debs, the socialist candidate for U.S. president, said: "Capital has served its mission. Capitalism has solved the problem of developing wealth. Socialism will solve the problem of redistributing it."
In 1965, at the Second Vatican Council, a committee studied the question of contraception, which was forbidden by the Catholic Church. Fifteen cardinals and bishops formed one group, 64 professionals another. At its conclusion, the recommendation for change by the first group was nine to six; by the second, 60 to four. Nevertheless, Pope Paul VI ruled against it, citing church tradition and the lack of unanimity.
Why isn't anyone concerned about the amount of energy and the environmental hazards associated with the making of a hybrid car?
In a representative democracy, voters are supposed to choose their legislators. In New York, the legislators instead choose who gets to vote for them.

Thirty years ago, I wrote an article in the UCLA Law Review arguing that the First Amendment should prevent governments from using taxpayer money to influence the outcome of elections and certainly should prevent the use of such money to protect incumbents. Many states, including New York, outlaw such abuse of the public trust.
As the victim of a drunk driver and a resident of Tompkins County, I am grateful that the STOP DWI program works to reduce alcohol-related traffic offenses.
A young man in our community has been critically injured in Afghanistan.
